Everything About
Digitizing Old Photos

How does Unmounted detect photos automatically?

Unmounted uses Apple Vision combined with edge-contrast analysis to automatically find each photo on scrapbook pages. It can detect overlapping prints, photos on dark paper, and even faded vintage images. Point your iPhone at any album page and the app places bounding boxes around every detected photo — typically 8-12 photos per page in seconds.

Can I adjust the crop boxes manually?

Yes. Every detected box has draggable corner and edge handles for precise adjustment. You can also draw new boxes by hand if the app misses a photo, or delete incorrect boxes. Long-press any box to bring it to the front if photos are stacked or overlapping. The goal is perfect crops with minimal manual work.

What are IPTC captions and why do they matter?

IPTC is a metadata standard that embeds names, dates, and stories directly into image files. Unlike cloud tags or folder names, IPTC captions travel with the photo file forever — they're visible in Photos app, Lightroom, iCloud, Google Photos, and every professional photo tool. When you add "Grandma Joan, Christmas 1952" as a caption in Unmounted, that information becomes a permanent part of the digital file, preserving family history for future generations.

What resolution does Unmounted save photos at?

Up to 4000 pixels on the longest edge. The app uses Lanczos upscaling to preserve detail when enlarging small prints. For comparison, a typical 4x6 photo scanned at 300 DPI produces roughly 1800x1200 pixels — Unmounted's 4000px output is more than sufficient for printing, archiving, and future-proofing your family photos.

Does Unmounted work with iPhone RAW files?

Yes. Unmounted handles ProRAW, HEIC, and JPEG files efficiently. RAW processing is optimized to avoid the 60-second waits common in other photo apps. You can photograph scrapbook pages in ProRAW for maximum quality, then let Unmounted process them quickly while preserving all that detail.

What adjustment tools are included?

Unmounted includes one-tap Auto Enhance that analyzes the histogram and intelligently sets exposure, contrast, and black point. For manual control, there are 10 precision sliders: Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Black Point, Saturation, Vibrance, Warmth (color temperature), Sharpness, and Vignette. Each adjustment is presented simply — tap an icon to slide open a single control, tweak only what you need.

What are the vintage filters?

Unmounted includes Noir (classic black and white), Chrome (rich color saturation), Fade (washed vintage look), Transfer (cross-processed film simulation), and several other professionally-designed filters. These give modern digital copies the aged patina that suits the era they came from — perfect for 1940s-1980s family photos that deserve period-appropriate treatment.

Do I need a scanner or subscription?

No. Unmounted requires only your iPhone — no scanning hardware, no monthly fees, no subscription. Download once, use forever to digitize every family album you own. The app is free with no hidden costs.
